Paper Bird is Anna Kohl Weis, born in 1984, who writes, records and designs her work as a one-woman-factory. Sounds and words have been emerging from her Vienna homebase since early 2005. Paper Bird has released three albums on Seayou Records since then, which were all recorded and produced in her home, along with artwork and videos. Peninsula (2006), a lo-fi collection of tentative songs recorded with a peanut-sized microphone in bedrooms, bathrooms and on beaches, Cryptozoology (2008), a mystic universe populated by strange stories about human relationships and animalistic humans, flutes, ukuleles and clapping choirs consisting of the artist herself and Thaumatrope (2009), a record that comes with multilayered vocals, rythms made from field recordings that rumble, rattle and roll through landscapes of lyrics that have been described as confusing, heavily metaphorical and almost painfully intimate. This intimacy has become an important part of Paper Bird live gigs, where songs are stripped down to their basic elements or performed karaoke-like to samples, often while wandering among the audience. Paper Bird ist –most of all – a storyteller, heavily influenced by the books, movies, records, television shows and pictures that surround her workspace and life.
